I decided to take a break from blogging this weekend. It seemed like a good time, with the holiday, and I needed a break from the computer. Here's a little of what we did...
I spent a lot of time in the garden--weeding, planting a hydrangea and a vibernum from a nursery sale, moving some plants around, and edging with some old brick that our neighbor gave us. I never get tired of working in the garden. There's always more to do (my list of projects is a mile long), but I can work for hours and love it.
At one point, Maia picked many of my zinnias while I was occupied (roots and all in a few cases). After I took a deep breath, and reminded myself that I want her to enjoy and play with the flowers, we used them to decorate her bean pole teepee. The beans themselves are starting to wind up the poles, but only a couple of the morning glory seeds germinated. Perhaps we should have planted more.
We picked some more blueberries this weekend and made cobbler. I'm copying my friend Tracy, who I saw at the blueberry farm, because when she told me she was going to make cobbler, I just thought, "yes" and "mmmm".
She also said she was going to make jam, but alas I haven't made that leap yet. I got a book called "Putting Food By" from the library, but you just need so much stuff. And it seems more complicated that I want to deal with right now. Of course I know it can't be all that complicated if all of our grandmothers and great grandmothers did it regularly, but still... Have any of you made jam or done any canning?
Our first ripe non-cherry tomato. I have to admit it didn't ripen on the vine though, at least not completely. Last year Maia picked most of my green tomatoes. This year she's moved on to picking my orange ones. Talk about frustrating! But she's getting a lot better and seems to understand now that we have to wait until they're ripe before picking them.
I also did some cleaning and organizing (exciting holiday weekend, right?!) and finally got out the paint chips and taped them to the wall. I've been wanting to paint our living room and hallway a lighter color since we moved in two years ago. And I think this is the magic summer.
What did you do this weekend? Any picnics, barbecues, parades, fireworks, organizing? :)
