Two exciting changes for the studio: first, we have a new table cover, and second, I finally put the tempera paint into small squeeze bottles for Maia so she can manage them herself.
And, just in case you think Maia's always as calm as she looks in most of my blog photos, here's one of the spastic kid a few minutes earlier.
Okay, losing my train of thought here... I've been wanting a new table for the studio and since that's not in the budget right now, I thought I'd cover it with a washable material such as oilcloth. I came across this gray vinyl on sale for $2.99 a yard at the fabric store and decided that it would probably work as well or better in terms of durability and washability and would also look okay with the colors in the studio. We spread it on the floor, set the table upside down on top, trimmed the vinyl to a couple of inches around the table, and Harry used screws to secure it. If it had just been wood, we probably would have used a staple gun, but it's laminate covered particle board (I think), which staples wouldn't have penetrated.
Yay! No more bright blue. The gray goes well with the green walls and is also a neutral backdrop for art in progress. I like it much better.
Here's Maia test driving both the new tabletop and the new squeeze bottles.
She put 2-3 colors in each bowl, mixed them, and then tested her new colors on paper.
Maia really enjoyed having control over the paint. We'll store these squeeze bottles on the low shelf so she can access them herself when she wants to paint. Both the accessible art materials and the new table cover are ideas I posted about a while ago here and here and have finally implemented. I can be big on the ideas and not so great on the follow through, but making my intentions public really seems to help keep me accountable. So thank you!
