We made con-tact paper collages with the art group this morning. This is a fun, tactile project without the mess of paint. And they make great suncatchers!
The girls (we had an all-girl group this week except for a younger brother) helped cut and tear tissue paper, ribbon, and yarn into various-sized pieces during our pre-art play session then carried the baskets of materials back to the studio when it was time to work on our project. I had set out the con-tact paper ahead of time, taping it to the table to hold it flat.
The kids pressed a variety of art materials to the sticky side of the con-tact paper then sandwiched them in with another sheet of the clear con-tact paper. Here Esmé is working on a basket weave design. She's also wearing a gorgeous dress her mom knit for her. I have come to realize that I have serious knitting envy. I gave up after my dishcloth attempt! I'm so used to the speed of sewing and just don't have the patience to knit stitch by stitch. But still I admire and lust after beautiful hand-knit items like this one.
After our art session, the girls played on the front porch and giggled over silly word permutations only fully appreciated by 3 and 4 year olds. Our new friend in the middle is Maya (yes, another one, just spelled differently). She and her family are newbies to Asheville.
