Okay folks. We have another Halloween craft we've been working on to decorate our house and get into the Halloween spirit. Coffee filter spider webs!
These are obviously inspired by all the coffee filter snowflakes we made last winter (so many!) as well as the coffee filter hearts we decorated our window with around Valentine's Day. As I've said before, coffee filters are perfect for this sort of scissor craft because they are thin without being flimsy, making it easier for kids to cut through multiple layers. Plus they are already round. And somewhat transparent, making them great for window decoration.
Everyone got into this activity. Maia and her friend Stella each made a couple of spider webs. Stella's mom, Molly, made a couple. Daphne had fun making cuts around the edges of several coffee filters. And I made several, too.
These are so easy, you probably don't need any how-to instruction. But I thought I'd show a few different ways I made these spider webs.
- At the top is the easiest of all -- just make a series of "V" cuts down one side of the folded coffee filter.
- At the center is the next easiest -- basically cutting rectangles along one side of the folded coffee filter.
- And I did the bottom one just to see if it would be any different to make the rectangular cuts along both sides. It wasn't really. Just more work. The bottom one is made from a larger piece of white tissue paper (the kind used in gift wrap), by the way, rather than a coffee filter.
We glued our coffee filter spider webs to the window with a few strategic dabs from a glue stick (it washes off easily when it's time to take them down).
I cut out a few tiny spiders from black felt just for fun and glued them up on the spider webs (you could also use black construction paper).
So now we have spiders, bats, pumpkins, and leaves for our fall and Halloween decorations. Seasonal, festive, and maybe just the tiniest bit spooky (bats and spiders don't scare me, but I guess they do some people?). This may be the scariest we get. Or perhaps we'll add in some ghosts for good measure...
